Honey safety
Can babies have honey?
Do not give honey to children younger than 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism. This includes raw or processed honey and foods or drinks containing honey. Never add honey to an infant's food, formula, water, or pacifier.
What should I know about allergies?
Honey can contain pollen. Do not consume a product if you are allergic to it or one of its ingredients. If you have pollen allergies or are unsure whether a bee-derived product is suitable for you, ask a healthcare professional before use. Natural ingredients are not a guarantee against allergic reactions.
Does local honey treat seasonal allergies or other medical conditions?
We sell honey as food and lip balm as a cosmetic. We do not claim that our products diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Scientific evidence does not establish honey as a treatment for seasonal allergies. Information on this website is general product information, not personalized medical advice.
Our honey and packaging
Where does your honey come from?
Our honey comes from colonies managed by Hannan Beekeeping in and around Franklin, North Carolina. Learn more about us and our apiaries.
Which varieties, sizes, and containers do you offer?
Our current honey selection is Wildflower and Sourwood, offered in 16-ounce glass jars, 16-ounce PET plastic bottles, and 32-ounce PET plastic bottles. Availability varies with the harvest. Check the current listings and select the container and size you want.
Are the ounce sizes weight or volume?
Honey sizes are net weight, not fluid ounces or the weight of the empty container: 16 oz is 1 lb (454 g), and 32 oz is 2 lb (907 g).
Why might my honey look different from a photo or an earlier order?
Floral sources and harvests naturally affect honey's color, flavor, and texture. Crystallization also changes its appearance. Photos illustrate the product; the listing and container label identify the variety, net weight, and packaging you are purchasing.
Storage and crystallization
How should I store honey?
Keep honey tightly closed in a dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Refrigeration is unnecessary and can encourage crystallization. Use clean, dry utensils and keep water out of the container.
Has crystallized honey gone bad?
Crystallization is a normal change in honey, not a sign of spoilage by itself. The speed varies by floral source and storage conditions, and crystallized honey can still be enjoyed.

How can I gently soften crystallized honey?
Use a warm, not boiling, water bath and keep water out of the honey. For honey in a PET bottle, transfer it to a clean, dry, heat-safe container before warming. Do not microwave PET bottles, place them on a stove, or expose them to boiling water. Avoid sudden temperature changes with glass.
When should I stop using a product?
Do not taste honey that has visible mold or persistent foaming accompanied by a sour or alcoholic smell. Do not consume honey from a cracked jar or use a product with suspected tampering. Contact us about a product concern; do not return broken glass without instructions.
Shipping, pickup, and order help
Can both glass and plastic containers be shipped?
Yes. Our listed honey in glass jars and PET bottles, as well as lip balm, is available for shipping or free Highlands Farmers Market pickup. Available options for your order are shown at checkout. See Shipping & Pickup for the listed rates and details.
When will my order arrive?
We normally prepare paid orders and hand them to the carrier within 1–2 business days. Carrier transit time follows dispatch and varies by destination and service. An express shipping option does not by itself promise same-day dispatch. Contact us before ordering if you need delivery for a particular date. If we cannot ship within a promised timeframe, we will contact you about the delay and your cancellation/refund options.
How does market pickup work?
Select Highlands Farmers Market pickup at checkout. Pickup is at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park, 411 Pine Street, Highlands, NC, on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon during market operation. Wait for confirmation that your order is ready before traveling, and bring your order confirmation. Contact us if you need another pickup date or if weather or the market schedule affects your plans.
What if my package arrives damaged, leaks, or contains the wrong item?
Contact us promptly with your order number, a description, and photos of the item and packaging if safe to take. Keep the packaging while we review the issue, and handle broken glass carefully. Do not consume honey if the jar is cracked or broken, or contamination is suspected.
Can I change, cancel, or return an order?
Contact us as soon as possible with your order number. Changes depend on whether the order has already been prepared or shipped. Please contact us before mailing back any food or personal-care product so we can review the concern and explain the available options. Nothing here limits rights you have under applicable consumer law.
Beeswax lip balm
What does a lip balm order include?
Each purchase is one tube in the scent you select: Unscented, Lemongrass Mint, or Lavender Eucalyptus. A photo showing three tubes illustrates the choices, not a three-pack.
What ingredients and precautions should I check?
Ingredients vary by scent. The Lemongrass Mint variety lists beeswax, cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, lemongrass oil, and peppermint oil. Review the label for your selected scent and contact us before ordering if you need its full ingredient information.
For external use on the lips only. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient; stop use if irritation develops. Store away from excessive heat. Natural oils and fragrances can cause sensitivities.
